Documentation and records

• What is an RFI in construction? — A Request for Information is a formal question from the contractor to the engineer or owner when field conditions do not match the design documents. RFIs create a written record of the question and the response.
• What is a submittal in construction? — A submittal is documentation — shop drawings, product data, mix designs, samples — that the contractor sends to the engineer for review and approval before the work or material is incorporated.
• What is a change order in construction? — A change order is a formal agreement that modifies the original contract scope, schedule, or price. It is the financial and legal record of changed work.
• What is a directive in construction? — A directive is an instruction from the owner or engineer to proceed with changed work before a formal change order is issued. Directives create scope without immediate cost resolution.

Compliance and environmental

• What is a SWPPP? — A Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan identifies pollutant sources and specifies the Best Management Practices that will prevent them from reaching storm drains and waterways.
• What is ADA compliance in construction? — ADA compliance means building curb ramps, detectable warning surfaces, and paths of travel that meet the slope and dimension requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• What is ESHA compliance? — Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Areas trigger buffer zone requirements, nesting season work restrictions, and biological monitoring requirements on projects near wetlands, riparian corridors, and other protected habitats.
• What is a Traffic Control Plan? — A TCP is a site-specific diagram showing lane closures, detour routes, device placement, and advance warning sequences. Required for any roadway closure and must comply with MUTCD.

Field operations

• What is a survey in construction? — Construction surveying establishes the precise positions that guide grading, structure placement, and utility installation. Rovers, total stations, and drones are the primary tools on heavy civil projects.
• Why field coordination fails — Field coordination fails when information loses geographic context moving from the office to the field. The crews working a specific station need to know what is open at that station — not somewhere on the project.
• Why spreadsheets fail heavy civil — Spreadsheets cannot show where an RFI sits on a corridor, render lane closures as geometry, or give a field crew immediate visibility into what is open at their location.
