What is ADA compliance in construction?
ADA compliance in construction means building pedestrian infrastructure that meets the accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. On public works and roadway projects, the most common ADA items are curb ramps, detectable warning surfaces, accessible parking stalls, and paths of travel.
Key ADA requirements on construction projects
- Curb ramps — Maximum running slope of 8.33% (1:12) and maximum cross slope of 2%. Flares on the side of the ramp cannot exceed 10%. Slopes are measured after concrete cures — not from the form.
- Detectable warning surfaces — Truncated dome panels installed at the base of curb ramps and at hazardous vehicle-pedestrian conflict areas. Dome spacing, height, and color contrast are specified by the ADA and most state standards.
- Accessible parking — Accessible stalls require a minimum 8-foot wide space with a 5-foot wide adjacent access aisle. Van-accessible stalls require an 8-foot wide aisle. Slopes within the stall cannot exceed 2% in any direction.
- Path of travel — Any path used by pedestrians must be accessible. On active construction projects, temporary accessible routes must be maintained when existing routes are disrupted.
Common ADA failures on construction projects
The most frequent ADA failures are slopes that exceed tolerance after concrete cures. A form set to 8% can cure to 8.5% due to settling or finishing technique — which is a non-conforming slope that requires removal and replacement. Inspectors measure with a digital level at multiple points across the ramp surface.
Tracking ADA compliance on a project map
Each curb ramp location can be pinned to the map with inspection status, slope measurements, and photos of the detectable warning surface. Non-conforming items stay open until the remediation photo is attached and the item is closed — creating a location-based compliance record for the project.
