Why field coordination fails on construction projects
Field coordination fails when teams lose visibility. It does not fail because people are lazy or careless. It fails because information moves through layers and loses geographic context along the way.
The most common failure points
- RFIs answered but never reaching the field — An RFI gets a written response in the office but the field crew at that station never hears about it. Work proceeds on the old assumption. Rework follows.
- Directives that change scope without universal visibility — An owner or engineer issues a verbal directive to the superintendent. The foreman two stations down does not know. The sub doing that scope does not know. Billing disputes come later.
- Information siloed between office and field — The PM has the latest drawing revision. The crew is working from a two-week-old print. Nobody flagged the conflict because nobody had a shared view of what was current at that location.
- No geographic context on large corridors — A problem at Station 42 is irrelevant to Station 78. But a flat list of open items does not make that distinction. Crews waste time reading through issues that have nothing to do with their work area.
- Meetings that produce decisions but no records — Site supers and foremen resolve issues in the field daily. None of it gets documented. Six months later those verbal agreements are invisible and the project record is incomplete.
The geographic problem
Heavy civil and public works projects span miles of corridor. A two-mile roadway project can have hundreds of open items across dozens of stations. Field crews need to know what is open right where they are standing — not what is open somewhere on the project. A flat list does not answer that question. A map does.
How map-based coordination fixes it
When every RFI, directive, submittal, and field issue is pinned to the GPS location where it occurred, the field crew at any station can open the map and immediately see what is open at their location. The office and the field share the same picture. Information stops getting lost in transit.
